At the halfway point between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the Vietnam’s south, you’ll find yourself in Da Nang. This is the fourth largest city in the country and a gem of a spot to base yourself, especially since it has an international airport. Most travellers come for its proximity to excellent beaches that stretch for 30 kilometres along the coastline. Here, you can get into all sorts of water sports, go fishing or diving, or simply find a spot beneath an umbrella.
About 45 minutes’ drive south of Da Nang is the beautifully preserved 15th-century trading port of Hoi An. Its fascinating Old Town, with a multicultural blend of architectural styles, has been heritage listed by UNESCO. There’s a great culinary scene to explore here, too – the noodle dish cao lau is the town’s speciality – as well as a number of expert tailors who can create the suit or dress of your dreams.
